This role focuses on the creation and continuous improvement of driveline and specialty fluids tailored to the high-performance requirements of Formula One and other professional motorsports, meeting or exceeding performance, reliability, and sanctioning body targets. The successful candidate will formulate driveline fluids from individual components, not incorporating commercial additive packages. This role requires working with cross-functional teams supporting various transmission and transaxle technologies, often incorporating hybrid and heat management elements, to constantly strive to increase vehicle performance. In alignment with agreed strategic objectives, they will lead research to design cutting-edge driveline fluids using the latest technology often being first to deploy new technology in the automotive field of use. They are also responsible to acquire, test, and deploy various fluids from external suppliers as finished goods, such as brake fluid, shock oil, and hydrophobic coatings, as requested by racing teams.
What youll be doing...
- Creates new racing driveline fluid formulations from basic components without the use of commercial additive packages, to constantly increase vehicle performance and durability for F1, NASCAR, and other types of professional racing
- Acquires, directs testing, and deploys various finished goods from external suppliers, such as brake fluid, shock oil, ultrasonic cleaners, and hydrophobic coatings, and collaborates with suppliers
- Lead research initiatives to design cutting-edge fluids using the latest technology, oversees laboratory-based testing, often being first to deploy new and/or novel technology in the automotive field
- Directs research and leads studies to develop innovative driveline fluid solutions that enhance vehicle performance, durability, and efficiency in high-stress racing environments
- Establishes and grows a strong external network of technical collaborators in the racing industry, academia, government laboratories, and suppliers.
- Define trade secrets patentable inventions, and seek patent protection when applicable
- Provides technical support to race teams, component suppliers, sanctioning bodies, etc. as required
What youll bring....
- Minimum B.S. in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering, Advanced Degree preferred
- Direct experience in F1 racing fluids and formulation experience required
- Strong technical background in engineering fundamentals including lubrication, thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics is required.
- 10+ years lab experience in the field with 5-7 years’ experience in racing or relevant R&D activity.
- Experience in tribology and lubricant product development is a preferred.
- Experience in Intellectual Property generation and control is a plus.
- Should possess an intellectual curiosity with a passion to explore and innovate both within and outside of stated area of expertise in pursuit of increased vehicle performance
- Familiarity with racing driveline hardware, fluid formulation, transmission operation and designs
- Knowledge of engine and transmission performance testing
- Ability to evaluate and select both providers and products from our sourced products portfolio for the professional racing industry
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for both technical and non-technical audiences
- Passion and enthusiastic, ability to work individually and in teams
